Michael Kliën founded the pioneering Laboratory for Social Choreography at the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University (NC, USA), which continues to serve as the home for his expanded choreographic research, developing interventions, methodologies for interdisciplinary dialogue, and pedagogical tools. In Europe, he continues his affiliation with the Greek non-profit R.I.C.E. His seminal work The Utopians (with Ensemble En Dynamei) premiered at the Athens Epidaurus Festival, and he initiated the social choreographic symposium 11th Organ, produced by Duke Arts. His long-standing series of social choreographic works (Parliament, Amendment, Constitution, and Inauguration) has unfolded over more than a decade. In June 2025, a major exhibition of Parliament opened at the Benaki Museum, Athens. New works currently in progress include Secession and the social choreographic work Theater, set to premiere in 2027/2028.
